Premier Cochrane Issues Statement for Orange Shirt Day

Over the weekend, Premier Caroline Cochrane issued a statement for the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

“On the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we must stand together as a territory to reflect upon the painful legacy of residential schools and to honour the countless children who never returned home, the survivors, their families, and their communities.

“This day is a solemn reminder of the historical injustices endured by Indigenous peoples. As a society, we must acknowledge the trauma caused by the residential school system and by the legacy of colonialism that we are still working to eradicate. We must commit to understanding the impacts and work collectively towards healing and reconciliation.

“On behalf of the Executive Council of the 19th Legislative Assembly, I reaffirm the Government of the Northwest Territories’ commitment to a path of reconciliation. This commitment extends to implementing the Calls to Action outlined by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, acknowledging the need for comprehensive changes across many sectors, including education, healthcare, justice, and social services.

“Our commitment to reconciliation includes a steadfast dedication to collaboration with the Indigenous governments of the Northwest Territories. We recognize the invaluable role of Indigenous leadership and governance in shaping policies and initiatives that address the unique needs and aspirations of their respective communities.

“Through meaningful dialogue and partnership, we have worked together during the life of this government to create a future where Indigenous voices are not only heard but are also integrated into the very fabric of our decision-making processes.

“I encourage all Northwest Territories residents to join me today in reflecting on the path toward reconciliation. Let us embrace the values of truth and reconciliation to ensure a better and brighter tomorrow for all residents of the Northwest Territories.”
