Hay River residents to return home tomorrow, healthcare services remain limited

The Town of Hay River has announced residents will be permitted to re-enter as the community begins Phase 2 of their return home plans.

Beginning September 16, 2023, at 9:00 am, Hay River residents will be allowed to return home after a near month-long evacuation order.

According to the Town of Hay River, wildland fire and structural protection crews have worked to ensure a safe return. As a result, the Town of Hay River has met the identified acceptable risk level set by Council.

Despite the order, Paradise Gardens and Pattersons Road, as well as the 2 Seasons, Castaway area will only be open for property owners and essential services.

Additionally, all essential organizations have prepared buildings, systems, and staff to be ready for reopening; however, health services will remain limited upon re-entry. Anyone with specific health restrictions is asked to review the Hay River Heath and Social Services reentry plan.

The GNWT is currently reviewing timelines for how long hotel accommodations will be served to evacuees in southern jurisdictions.

An Evacuation Notice will remain for residents as the wildfire in the area continues to present a “general” risk.
