Drone operators could face up to $3,000 fines for operating near NWT wildfires: RCMP

The NWT RCMP is reminding members of the public that drone use around wildfires can have serious consequences.

According to the RCMP, the use of drones near firefighting operations can present a serious risk to fire crews and prevents aircraft from effectively responding to wildfire incidents.

Officials say the altitude that firefighting aircraft need to fly at means collisions with illegally operated drones is more likely than normal conditions.

Under the Canadian Aviation Regulations, drones must be operated below 90m above the ground, 30m away from vehicles and the public for drones under 1kg, 75m away from vehicles and the public for drones up to 35kg, 5.5 km away from airports, and away from first responder operations such as fire, police, and EMS.

Police have advised all drone pilots and members of the public that fines ranging from $1,000 to $3,000 will be issued to anyone who fails to comply with drone safety regulations.
