Winds shift south in Hay River blaze, KFN sees minor fire growth in the east

Temperatures were cooler than forecasted yesterday afternoon as heavy smoke remains in the Hay River/KFN blaze.

Despite the cooler temperatures, NWT Fire says rain originally forecasted for the evening never came, and fire activity picked up slightly mid-day due to western winds.

Conditions are expected to clear this afternoon as morning winds shift south. Temperatures are forecasted to reach a dry 20 degrees, which may support fire growth in the north.

After successful controlled ignition operations east of Sandy Creek, crews have moved efforts to tightlining the area, hosing the eastern edge, and digging away forest to establish a control line in the east.
