Structure protection continues in Hay River wildfire efforts, heavy activity expected Friday

Flights were able to take off in the South Slave on August 30, despite heavy smoke in the region for most of the day.

NWT Fire officials say the blaze had little progression thanks to favourable weather conditions.

Smoke may clear by the afternoon today; however, thunderstorms are forecasted which may bring erratic winds and unpredictable fire behaviour alongside minimal rain, but not enough to make a significant difference.

Crews remain concerned for what may lay ahead Friday, as hot, dry, conditions, and winds from the southwest gusting up to 50-60km/h are expected, which may cause significant growth to the east.

Structure protection remains a constant for crews as the blaze remains out of control and continues to be an active threat to the community.
