Essential workers returning to Yellowknife instructed to exercise caution as Highway 1 wildfires remain volatile

As Yellowknife continues Phase 3 of the GNWT’s re-entry plans, the territorial government has instructed departments to begin the return of essential workers.

All personnel must be designated and approved by community governments, local authorities or GNWT departments.

Anyone who is driving back to the capital is instructed to be cautious as Highway 1 is hazardous with fires on both sides and will close frequently. Prolonged wait times at the NWT border should also be expected.

The GNWT is managing air travel for anyone in need of a flight home and the EMO is currently gathering data to plan the logistics of this process. Flights from Edmonton, Calgary, Grand Prairie, Whitehorse, and Winnipeg will be available, but workers are responsible for reaching these points through their own means.

Family members of essential personnel are welcome to join workers; however, the GNWT is reminding residents that services in the city remain limited. Essential personnel already in the city cannot bring family back.

The evacuation order remains for all non-essential residents.
