“We didn’t get much rain”: Mayor Alty speaks on potential return home for Yellowknife

As fire evacuations settle down in Yellowknife, many residents have been left wondering when they can return.

Yellowknife Mayor Rebecca Alty spoke on the issue, saying crews are actively monitoring the matter, to ensure a safe return home for Yellowknifers.

“We’ll continue to monitor the fire, similar to when we monitored the fire for the evacuations, and when it’s deemed safe, the community would be welcomed back,” Alty tells MyTrueNorthNow.

Alty also spoke on the rain that affected the city over the weekend, saying while it might be hopeful for some, it is not enough to ensure the safety of the city.

“One thing I want to stress is I know that it did rain on Saturday and Sunday, we didn’t get much rain,” the Mayor says.

“We’re not getting enough rain, although it’s raining in Yellowknife, that doesn’t mean that it’s raining on the fire, just because something’s happening in Yellowknife, doesn’t mean it’s happening where the fire is,” she adds.

Additionally, the Mayor confirmed that plans are in place to ensure an effective return home for Yellowknifers; however, Alty is stressing this does not mean a return is close.
