Rainfall opens up opportunities for direct attack on perimeter of Yellowknife wildfire

The wildfire outside Yellowknife remains out of control and was last mapped at 167,082 hectares burned in the territory.

According to NWT Fire, more than 300 personnel, 14 helicopters, and heavy equipment has been assigned to combat the blaze.

Overnight, 4.7mm of rain fell on the fires, and over 10mm of rain hit the city itself, supporting crews and further decreasing the likelihood of the fire reaching the capital today.

NWT Fire says winds are expected to continue to shift away from the city, from the northeast to east in the afternoon and southeast in the evening.

“No fires are expected to progress significantly today as a result of these conditions – giving an opportunity to get good work done,” NWT Fire says.

Crews say they are now in a positive position to directly attack the perimeter of the fire, and more than 40km of hot line is ready to attack along the eastern perimeter of the fire (closest to Yellowknife).
