NWT Fire has released a notice to concerned residents of Behchokǫ̀ regarding the heavy smoke visible from the community.
According to NWT Fire, the smoke is coming from areas of forest which were not burned by the fire.
“With high southeast winds today, it is burning off forest towards the Russell and Marian Lake area,” NWT Fire says.
NWT Fire says the area between Russell and Marian and the community has already been burned by the fire, leading NWT Fire to say the flames are not currently a threat to Behchokǫ̀.
“Feeling nervous about it is completely understandable,” NWT Fire adds.
Crews have also reminded residents that a perimeter around Rae and Frank Channel has been established, and crews are on the ground ready to ensure any hotspots are taken care of immediately.
