The government of the Northwest Territories made a commitment on May. 26th to have new land claim offers to two Indigenous Nations.
The Akaitcho Dene First Nation and the Northwest Territory Métis Nation will see an increase in land certainty and resource management.
When making the announcement, Northwest Territories Premier Bob McLeod said the Territorial government is focusing on building a more stable relationship with the Indigenous governments.
“We are committed to concluding the remaining land claim and self-government agreements in the Northwest Territories by taking innovative, flexible approaches that will result in fair and equitable agreements to recognize and protect Indigenous and treaty rights consistent with their aspirations.”
Negotiations will continue in order to further refine the details of the land claim offers and any other remaining issues in the draft agreements.
