Yellowknife police issue warning following rash of car break-ins

Yellowknife RCMP issued a public warning Wednesday following a number of vehicle break-ins and thefts in the downtown core overnight.

Police say they received multiple reports of vehicles being broken into and valuables being taken between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.

In the process, the suspects also broke vehicle windows and damaged doors throughout a large area.

The break-ins were mostly concentrated in the area of Matonabee Street, Gitzel Street, 52 Street, 49 Street, 48 Street, 47 Street, and Raven’s Court.

“While theft from vehicles is often a crime of opportunity, the break-ins [Tuesday] night were forced entry,” said RCMP spokesperson Marie York-Condon.

“While it is still best to lock your vehicles and not leave valuables in plain sight, we are urging people to be extra vigilant in keeping an eye on your, and your neighbour’s property.”

Police are asking anyone with surveillance video to review it and report any suspicious activity to them.

Should you have any information, contact Yellowknife RCMP at (867) 669-1111 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
