The pandemic has been a chaotic time for many, but for Fred Sangris, it was made all the more so when he ran for Ndilo Chief in the recent YKDFN election.
well, it was a long haul for two months I’ve been campaigning and trying to get as many supporters as I can and it was very hectic and a lot of work. But I managed to pull through the support of my family and friends. It was a hard work, but I get it. I’m happy about it.

Sangris beat out current Chief Ernest Betsina by 49 votes.
Now he’s in the position Sangris said some of his priorities are working on the Akaitcho land treaty agreement and improving economic opportunities for members.
Well, we live in one of the biggest city in the Northwest Territories, Yellowknife with a big population. Over the last 10 years I believe you’re gonna have been contributing a little over 25 million to the city of Yellowknife, through all our corporations or entities, employees, we spend all our money here but in return for the city, we’re not getting a lot back.

Sangris added that securing an apology and compensation for Giant Mine will be one of the biggest issues he’s going to tackle. He hopes in his time as chief he’ll be able to address all members concerns about the area.
And I’m hoping that we can continue working together and try to advance forward you know, we don’t want to be caught in the cog wheel and standstill. We want to continue to move forward and move forward on the things we have been working on.
