The Town of Hay River announced they are accepting applications for Phase Two of their Residential Development Grant Program which has its sights set on boosting affordable housing within the community.
Glenn Smith, the town’s senior administrative officer told True North FM that interest from residents and business owners has been good so far.
“We’ve had a fair amount of success and interest through that phase and we’re just processing now some of the applications entering into some agreements that will hopefully see the construction of those units that are supported through phase one, but with phase two now as of today, and on a first come first, serve basis. Applicants who are interested in developing secondary suites, which includes living suites basement suites, garage or garden suites or sometimes now referred to as accessory dwelling units. They can submit applications and receive up to twenty thousand dollars for the development of those secondary Suites.
Smith said the town had a call for applications going back towards the beginning of 2025 where residents and business owners could apply for new multi-family dwelling units, or grants to support the construction of new multi-family dwelling units.
This next phase of Hay River’s Residential Development Grant program follows Phase One with a focus on incremental multi-family dwellings.
“Budget permitting, the Town will continue to accept Phase One applications and review on a first come, first served basis,” said representatives from the town in the announcement today.
Property owners and developers are required to be in good standing with the Town to apply and their proposal must meet the required guidelines
“We recognize the urgent need for more housing options in our community, and these grants are a vital step towards addressing that need,” said Mayor Jameson of the Town of Hay River in today’s announcement.
“By providing financial support, we aim to encourage developers to invest in our community and enhance the quality of life for all residents through affordable housing options,” added Jameson.
“We’re working through agreements right now that could see you potentially 40 units constructed through (the program),” said Smith.

The town recently updated their zoning and building bylaws as part of Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation’s Housing Accelerator Fund, which has boosted funding for housing by $2 million and could mean more in grants, said Smith.
