Fort Liard RCMP are concerned with the higher than usual number of impaired drivers that they have encountered over the month of October.
Throughout the last few months, Fort Liard officers have laid seven impaired driving charges to motorists in the area, which is unusually high for the area. Two of the charges were issued as part of Operation: Impact, a national traffic safety initiative.
Three of these charges were issued to the same driver who was encountered three different times across two weeks. In each instance, the driver provided breath samples showing that their blood alcohol content was more than two times over the legal limit. One incident saw the man strike an RCMP vehicle with his ATV, which has since been seized alongside his license. This man will be appearing in court on November 20th in Fort Liard.
Fort Liard officers are concerned with these numbers in their community, as impaired driving remains one of the leading causes of death across Canada. They remind all motorists that any kind of vehicle can become the subject of an alcohol screening by the police.
