Aurora College Awarded over $1 Million for Applied Research Efforts

Aurora College has just been given a substantial amount of funding to be used for some of their more advanced research.

The College will be receiving $1.5 Million over the course of five years through a special grant from the Natural Sciences Engineering and Research Council. This funding will be used for the college’s various applied research programs, as well as factors like expanding faculty engagement, student training, and community innovations.

An additional feature of this grant is that it will also provide partnerships with local and Indigenous communities in the NWT as a way to look into what these communities and their residents need and what can be improved.

Funds from the grant will be used to launch new applied research projects, and to improve already existing ones. Students will be able to take advantage of experiential learning opportunities in research alongside faculty, hire additional research staff, and cover some indirect research costs in shared projects with communities. This will also introduce new award opportunities for students, such as paid research opportunities.

Dr. Angela James, the President of Aurora College, called the announcement a “significant investment that enables Aurora College to further our commitment to applied research that addresses the unique challenges and opportunities of the Northwest Territories. By strengthening our research capacity and providing our students with hands-on applied research and learning experiences, we are preparing them to contribute meaningfully to the region’s economic transformation.”
