Government of Canada, GNWT, and City of Yellowknife announce $7.9 million affordable housing investment

On June 30, 2023, the Federal, Territorial, and City governments announced $7.9 million in funding to create 36 permanent affordable homes in Yellowknife.

The project, called Aspen Apartments, will convert former federal staff housing into new permanent affordable homes with the goal of helping Indigenous people, single mothers, and individuals experiencing homelessness.

“Homelessness is a reality for too many people in Yellowknife, and we are working to ensure everyone in our community has a safe place to call home, while also creating jobs for the local economy,” MP Michael McLeod says.

Upon completion, the new homes will be owned and operated by Housing NWT.

“Housing Northwest Territories and its partners have worked hard to increase our stock of quality, energy-efficient, and affordable housing units to help residents who are experiencing or at risk of experiencing homelessness,” Minister Responsible for Housing NWT and Homelessness Paulie Chinna says.

As the building was previously owned by Public Services and Procurement Canada, the building will be transferred to the community through the Federal Lands Initiative (FLI).

The investment is broken down into two streams of funding, $5 million from the third round of the federal government’s Rapid Housing Initiative and $2.9 million under FLI.
