YK Old Town Parking Lot will be closed starting July 22

The city of Yellowknife announced that the Old Town Parking Lot will no longer be accessible to the public starting July 22, due to construction for the Lift Station #1 Replacement Project, a major wastewater and sewage infrastructure project.

Saxon Chung, corporate communications advisor, released a notification to the public on behalf of the city.

“Property owners with items stored on-site will receive reminder calls from the Municipal Enforcement Division regarding the final deadline for removal, which is Monday, July 21, 2025. Any remaining items after this date will be towed and securely stored at the Solid Waste Facility.

The parking lot will no longer be used for recycling drop-off.

“Recycling bins in the area will be removed from service for the duration of construction. Residents will be directed to alternative recycling sites, such as 52 Street and the landfill,” said Chung in the announcement.

The city says construction is anticipated to take about three years, during which the parking lot will not be accessible to the public.

Construction is expected to take approximately three years, during which time the parking lot will remain closed to public access.

In their announcement, the city acknowledged the inconvenience the closure may have for residents,   as during the summer and tourism seasons, the parking lot is often frequented by residents, businesses and visitors.

The city also announced that the westbound lane of Franklin Avenue will be under construction from Hershman Road to 44 Street for paving.
