On June 22, 2023, the Yellowknives Dene First Nation and the Government of Canada celebrated the signing of an agreement regarding the Giant Mine Remediation Project.
Chief Edward and Fred Sangris representing Dettah and Ndılǫ signed the agreement on behalf of the Yellowknives Dene First Nation (YKDFN). Canada was represented by Minister of Northern Affairs Dan Vandal, and Minister of Public Services and Procurement Helena Jaczek.
The agreement is meant to confirm Canada’s commitment to ensure Indigenous-owned businesses are utilized through the remediation process and create an accountability mechanism for the Project Team to report to YKDFN during the project.
“It (the agreement) provides for tougher penalties for companies that do not meet their commitments for increased Indigenous opportunities in the work they do on the Project.” Dettah Chief Edward Sangris says.
The agreement does not deal with the YKDFN’s request for an apology or compensation for any harm caused to YKDFN territory, but Canada says they recognize the opportunity to continue reconciliation efforts.
“As we continue to work together to manage the legacy of the Giant Mine, we are committed to addressing the wrongs of the past and supporting partners in their vision for a better, more prosperous future,” Vandal says.
