Dechinta to partner with University of British Columbia

The NWT’s Dechinta Bush University has signed a partnership deal with the University of British Columbia (UBC).

Dechinta is a land-based Aboriginal learning centre offering programs of around three months in length, combining traditional knowledge and skills with academic studies.

Now, after five years in existence, Dechinta will receive part-time faculty support from UBC.

That will take the form of Dr Glen Coulthard, First Nations and Indigenous Studies professor at UBC, sharing his teaching time with Dechinta.

In a statement, Dechinta’s Dr Erin Freeland-Ballantyne said UBC’s contribution would “support the ability of a renowned Indigenous scholar to be able to teach on his home territory, to contribute to furthering education within his nation, and to support the continued growth of Dechinta”.

Dr Coulthard’s latest book – entitled Red Skin, White Masks: Rejecting the Colonial Politics of Recognition – was launched at Yellowknife’s Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre on Saturday.
