Det’on Cho strengthening local connections across North

Det’on Cho continues to be a staple in the community of YK,  Ndilo and Dettah, led and owned by the Yellowknives Dene First Nation.

A representative who works for Det’on Cho Management LP explained that the company began in 1988 with a seed grant of just $15,000 and over the last 37 years of hard work, determination, and adherence to Dene values, Det’on Cho has bloomed into an investment company with a portfolio of 28 companies. The organization has become one of the largest companies in the North and as the company grows, it continues to embrace Dene values of integrity, accountability, culture and competency through partnerships and opportunities that strengthen local economic growth in the North.

The representative who spoke with True North FM has been working for the company since moving to Yellowknife in 2017 and since that time has worked in various roles, following an ongoing personal and career growth path.

“We are very proud to work with Northern companies and we have many local and Indigenous partners,” he said.

Bouwa Whee is 100 per cent Northern-owned and 100 per cent Indigenous-owned, operating out of Yellowknife, he explained.

“It is a great company to work for. Bouwa Whee is 20 years old, that goes to show that it has been the staple in the north for so long – they do catering, housekeeping and accommodation management services – and this is in the North, which is among the most challenging conditions in the world,” he pointed out.

Multi-disciplinary professionals within the organization often work on various rotations and across locations in the territories.

“They’re constantly providing that continual service to our clients,” he said.

The team of chefs, bakers and other professionals come from diverse backgrounds. Chefs and bakers apply traditional Indigenous practices and the cultures of the North while also embracing various cultures that now call the North home.

The Det’on Cho Group is continuing to grow and is looking for more potential team members to respond to the needs of their clients. They are hosting a job fair and looking to recruit for positions for various hospitality and camp catering positions.

The job fair takes place between 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Nunasi Building (across from Boston Pizza). Job interviews will also be conducted on-site to ensure everyone has a fair chance at applying, said the representative from Det’on Cho.
