No new fires in the NWT and one fire extinguished in North Slave

No new wildfires have been reported in the territories, as crews continue to mobilize a targeted response to fires in the Beaufort Delta, Dehcho and North Slave regions.

NORTH SLAVE REGION

In the North Slave region, a wildfire located west of Edzo (ZF023 ) is considered under control  after an aggressive air attack and follow-up by two wildfire crews. Crews continue work to check for spot fires due to high winds today to prevent any potential threat to Edzo.

A fire near the south end of Campbell Lake (ZF024) is being re-evaluated.

“Air tankers hit this fire hard July 2nd and two crews are now on site to further action it. The fire has escaped the initial attack area and is being reassessed. No immediate threats to communities, cabins, or infrastructure. Strong winds today will challenge suppression efforts,” said NWT Fire.

Officials have been in contact with residents regarding a fire east of Watta Lake.

“ECC is in touch with stakeholders to provide information and updates on the situation as per the update,” said officials.

Located about 3 km east of Watta Lake (ZF011), the wildfire remains “active and visible” spreading southwest due to northeasterly winds.

“Objectives with this fire are to protect cabins, lodges, and other values in the area using sprinklers or small-scale ignition operations should they become threatened. However, with numerous barriers to fire growth, no values are assessed as at threat in the near future due to this fire. Assessments and consultations with owners in the area took place and plans are in place should this fire become a threat,” said NWT Fire.

Two fires are located near the highway (ZF015 and ZF016) and are being monitored. Officials ask the public to head to drivenwt.ca to keep updated on road conditions.

Another two fires (ZF013 and ZF022) can be seen near Snare Hydro, and officials assured that these fire do not pose a threat at this time, and are being monitored.

A wildfire that was located about 29 km northeast of Tibbit Lake (ZF021) has now been declared out after an assertive initial attack by crews and air support.

BEAUFORT DELTA REGION

In the Beaufort Delta region, one wildfire 20 km southwest of Fort McPherson (EV019-25) can be clearly seen from the Dempster Highway.

“It remains 30 hectares in size and is challenging efforts due to the terrain,” said Fire crews. The fire poses no threats to the community of Fort McPherson, highway access or cabins in the area, said officials.

“Airtankers and two initial attack crews continue working to keep intensity down and contain it. If you are looking for more information on this fire, call the wildfire info line at 867-445-5484; do not call your local base – they have been overwhelmed by requests on this fire,” said NWT Fire.

Containing a fire located about 33 km east of Inuvik (EV016-25) remains a high priority for crews, who are making good progress in containing its perimeter even amid the fire’s challenging behaviour.

“Airtankers continue to make drops since yesterday evening to cool the perimeter down to assist these efforts. No threats to the community or other values at this time,” said officials.

Another wildfire, located about 37 km east of Inuvik (EV017-25) has demonstrated low activity over the last 24 hours said crews who are continuing their response to contain it.

A wildfire located about 5 km west-northwest of Fort McPherson (EV022-25 () is at a status of Being Held, which means that under current and expected weather, and firefighting resources assigned, Fire crews don’t expect it to grow. Officials said the fire poses no threats to the community at this time.

Another fire, about 15 km southwest of Fort McPherson (EV021-25) has grown to about 32 hectares.

“Airtankers made drops yesterday to assist in containment efforts. Wildfire crews continue to work to extinguish hotspots at its perimeter and limit its growth – good progress being made. No threats to the community,” assured NWT Fire.

DEHCHO REGION

In the Dehcho region, a lightning caused fire (FS018) located about 18 km northeast of Sambaa K’e, approximately 40 hectares in size, is being monitored by Fire crews.

Officials reported that there are cabins in the area that Fire crews are working to protect.

“Airtankers are making drops to reduce its intensity and limit growth to the south. There are no threats to the community of Sambaa K’e or infrastructure in the area at this time,” said NWT Fire.

In the Liard Complex (FS002, FS006 and FS009), fire is being activated on with air tankers and crews who continue working to contain the north and west boundaries of fire FS009 to prevent spread towards the community of Fort Liard. Officials said the fire poses no immediate threats to communities or infrastructure.

About 23 km southeast of Fort Simpson and 24 km northwest of Jean-Marie River a wildfire (FS014) is being activated on by the Incident Management Team.

Crews responding to this fire continue make good progress.

“Nearly 40 per cent of the perimeter has been contained by crews. Air support continues as required to assist them in their progress,” said officials.

A wildfire located about 22 km west of Fort Simpson (FS017) was contained after a swift and coordinated response from air and ground crews. Crews are laying hose around the perimeter to extinguish hotspots and bring the fire under control.
