Between May 24 and 25, Hay River RCMP arrested three people who are now facing drinking and driving related charges. Police issued a message of warning to the public today about the dangers of driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
RCMP report that in the early morning hours of May 24 at about 2:20 a.m. officers received information regarding a person who had driven away from a bar intoxicated.
“The driver, a 35-year-old female, was located and subsequently failed roadside alcohol screening. She was arrested and later release after providing breath samples twice the legal limit,” said Hay River police.
RCMP reported that later that day, at about 9:15p.m. officers received a report that a person was operating an ATV while intoxicated on Kátł’odeeche First Nation.
“The 43-year-old male was located, arrested and provided breath samples over three times the legal limit,” said police.
On May 25 at about 4:00 p.m. an officer conducting patrols of the community noted a vehicle driving erratically and conducted a traffic stop.
“The driver, a 40-year-old male, was observed to be intoxicated and was arrested. He provided breath samples over four times the legal limit,” said Hay River police.
All three were released to appear in court at later dates and are facing criminal charges for impaired operation of a conveyance.
“Motorists are reminded that they are subject to Mandatory Alcohol Screening during any traffic stop with police. Anyone operating a vehicle with a blood alcohol content of 50mg of alcohol per 100mL of blood or higher faces immediate licence suspension, or criminal charges if that number is 80 or higher,” warned RCMP.
Hay River RCMP thanked the members of the public who reported these drivers in an effort to improve the safety of their communities.
