NWT RCMP announced today that a former NWT teacher who had been charged with sexual offences has been convicted on sexual assault charges. Sentencing will be carried out independently by the courts at a future date, the RCMP report.
Neil Barry was found guilty of two counts of sexual assault and two counts of sexual exploitation on May 10, following a three-week trial.
Going back to 2021, Neil had faced charges in connection to a number of historical allegations of sexual assault and exploitation.
In an announcement today, the police acknowledged the courage of the witnesses who came forward.
“The RCMP recognizes the traumatic nature of sexual abuse, and the difficulties victims often face when choosing to bring forward allegations, regardless of the length of time that has passed. We applaud the bravery of the victims in this matter today and express our gratitude for their courage,” said police.
Officials also acknowledged that more victims could be out there.
“The RCMP also acknowledges the fact that during his career, Neil Barry had also been active in Prince Edward Island, Nunavut and Alberta, and the possibility exists that there could be more victims who have not come forward to police,” officials said.
The RCMP ask anyone who may be a victim of a sexual offence to contact their local detachment or police of jurisdiction.
The RCMP assured that officers use a Trauma Informed Approach when conducting investigations of a sexual nature and are committed to physical and emotional safety for all survivors and victims.
“When you are ready to speak, they can help you understand the options available to you,” urged the RCMP in their announcement.
