Three people are facing drugs, weapons and “forcible confinement” charges after police searched a residence on Bigelow Crescent in the city of Yellowknife over the weekend.
On May 23, police received a report that a person had been sexually assaulted at a house on Bigelow Crescent. Police also received a report of drugs and weapons being present in the house.
The Yellowknife Specialized Response Unit was engaged and took the lead in the investigation. Support from the G Division Emergency Response Team, Police Dog Services, Forensic Identification section, Territorial Crime Reduction Unit and other resources executed a search of the home. Three people were taken into police custody following the search.
RCMP seized evidence, including a shotgun and drug trafficking paraphernalia. Police report that there were no injuries.
A 28-year-old man from Yellowknife, who was already out on bail and subject to a weapons prohibition order is facing a number of charges in relation to the incident:
- Sexual assault, contrary to section 271 of the Criminal Code
- 2 counts of weapons possession contrary to an order, contrary to section 117.01(1) of the Criminal Code
- Unauthorized possession of a firearm, contrary to section 91(1) of the Criminal Code
- Forcible Confinement, contrary to section 279(2) of the Criminal Code
- Trafficking of a controlled substance (cocaine), contrary to section 5(1) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act
- 2 counts of failure to comply with a release order, contrary to section 145(5)(a) of the Criminal Code
A 38-year-old man from Yellowknife,who is also subject to bail and a weapons prohibition order, is also facing a number of charges:
- Unauthorized possession of a firearm, contrary to section 91(1) of the Criminal Code
- 2 counts of failure to comply with a release order, contrary to section 145(5)(a) of the Criminal Code
- 2 counts of weapons possession contrary to an order, contrary to section 117.01(1) of the Criminal Code
- Trafficking of a controlled substance (cocaine), contrary to section 5(1) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act
A 61-year-old woman from Yellowknife is facing two charges:
- Possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking (cocaine), contrary to section 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act
- Forcible Confinement, contrary to section 279(2) of the Criminal Code
The two men who are facing charges appeared before a Justice of the Peace and were remanded into custody. The woman who is facing charges was released conditionally to appear in court at a later date.
