Man pleads guilty to drug charges stemming back to March 2024

A 37-year-old man from Fort Providence has pleaded guilty to possessing a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking.

The charges stem back to March 2024 when Délı̨nę RCMP received information that two people were attempting to bring an excess quantity of alcohol on a flight into the community.

Officers were able to intercept the large quantity of alcohol. While conducting the investigation, officers located a third person who was on court-ordered conditions to remain in Yellowknife.

The 37-year-old man from Fort Providence was arrested and searched. Officers located 113 grams of crack cocaine and 13 grams of a substance suspected to be Gabapentin.

On May 16, the man pleaded guilty in Territorial Court to one count of Possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking (cocaine), contrary to section 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.

He received a sentence of 30 months in custody, less time already served, and a 10-year firearms prohibition order. He was also ordered to submit a DNA sample to the National DNA Data Bank.

“This conviction is another example of the efforts made by the Délı̨nę RCMP to put an end to drug trafficking in the community,” said the police in a statement released today.

“The Northwest Territories RCMP is committed to target enforcement responses to reduce illegal drugs and alcohol in our communities,” they added.

Anyone who has information about drug trafficking or bootlegging is asked to contact the Délı̨nę RCMP at 867-589-1111 or Crime Stoppers at http://www.p3tips.com. In the event of an emergency, the police ask the public to call 911.
