Premier Simpson hopes Western Premiers’ Conference builds a “united voice”

The Western Premiers’ Conference begins today in the city of Yellowknife and will see territorial and provincial premiers from across the North and west tackle a whole range of critical issues from Arctic security to emergency preparedness to housing.

Premier R.J Simpson told True North FM that he anticipates a constructive meeting and a chance for leaders to explore shared concerns.

“As Premier, I’m looking forward to discussions on key national and regional priorities, including international trade, economic and energy corridors, Arctic security, emergency preparedness, and housing. These meetings provide an opportunity to strengthen provincial and territorial collaboration and explore how Premiers can collectively advocate for robust federal responses to shared challenges,” said Premier Simpson.

N.W.T.’s Premier emphasized that he is focused on collaborations that build a “united voice.”

“We need strong intergovernmental cooperation to build resilient infrastructure, respond to emergencies, and increase housing supply. By working together and speaking with a united voice, Premiers aim to deliver meaningful results for Canadians and ensure that regional needs are addressed in national policy decisions,” he urged.

Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew, B.C. Premier David Eby, Sask. Premier Scott Moe, Alta. Premier Danielle Smith, Nunavut Premier P.J. Akeeagok, Yukon Premier Ranj Pillai together with host Premier R.J. Simpson, are expected to attend the two-day conference, which takes place each year.

The last time the conference was held in Yellowknife was back in 2018.

Some topics of discussion will likely include the Grays Bay Road and Port proposal, along with the Mackenzie Valley Highway proposal. These projects are aimed at building and connecting roadways to and across the North.

Prime Minister Mark Carney is scheduled to hold a conference with the premiers of each province and territory in Saskatoon, Sask.
