LKFN Leaders Oppose Closing of Community Learning Centre

It was recently announced that, due to low enrolment numbers, Aurora College would be rolling back and closing down all of their Community Learning Centres across the NWT. However, this decision has received some pushback.

A statement from the LKFN expresses the community’s disappointment in this announcement. They explain that this course of action would close the Dehcho Region’s only Community Learning Centre, and that the decision to close the location was made without consultation with LKFN leaders.

The statement explains that the closure of this CLC would be a significant setback, due to the community’s already low high school graduation rates.

“The Territorial Government’s failed fiduciary responsibility and minimal investment in education outside of Yellowknife exacerbates this issue.”

LKFN Chief Kele Antoine added her voice to the discussion.

“We do not accept the reasons for this decision. Removing access to local learning opportunities only deepens the barriers our people face in pursuing education and employment. Aurora College and the Government of the Northwest Territories must work with Indigenous people to find real solutions that prioritize community-based learning and not take it away. Our people deserve better.”

The LKFN are urging the Aurora College Board of Governors to gather for a direct meeting to discuss the matter, and to better understand their educational needs. They are also requesting that the GNWT to honour and uphold their Treaty Rights to education.
