In an effort to continue the protection of language rights across the NWT, the Legislative Assembly has appointed a new Acting Official Languages Commissioner.
The decision was recommended by the Board of Management, and it was officially declared that Krista Carnogursky, the Ombud for the Northwest Territories, will be filling the role effective January 10th.
As part of the Official Languages Act, Carnogursky’s duties as Commissioner will include making sure that the Territory’s eleven official languages are recognized and respected. She will also be in charge of investigating issues of non-compliance with those rights.
Carnogursky has been serving as Ombud since July, and has much experience in administrative fairness and serving Northern residents. Her temporary position as Commissioner will allow the Assembly to look into a long-term solution to language advocacy matters, while making sure language rights are supported.
