The GNWT has just announced that they are donating $150,000 to the community of Norman Wells.
This donation is being made to help offset the struggles the community has faced due to rising fuel prices and disruptions to their supply chains. Over the summer, Norman Wells experienced record low water levels along the Mackenzie River, which led to the cancellation of the barge resupply deliveries that the community relies on. This led to a higher reliance on other transportation methods and higher costs on goods, which further led to higher costs on the fuel needed for air transport.
The GNWT is hoping that this donation will help tip the scales back in Norman Wells’ favour by supporting their local businesses and resupply methods. They are working with local businesses, Indigenous governments, and even the Government of Canada to look into long-term infrastructure solutions that could help avoid these situations in the future.
Premier R.J. Simpson said that the GNWT “remains committed to supporting the people of Norman Wells and the Sahtu region. This $150,000 donation to the food bank reflects our continued dedication to providing essential relief to families during this challenging time. In partnership with community leaders, Indigenous governments, and businesses, we are working toward both immediate relief and long-term solutions to ensure the region can build resilience for the future.”
