The GNWT will be sending funding to Sahtu and Beaufort Delta in order to help local businesses offset the effects of the low water levels in the area.
Over the summer, resupply barges along the Mackenzie River had to be cancelled due to low water levels. Sahtu and Beaufort Delta saw the biggest impact from this issue. The GNWT is working with Indigenous and community governments and businesses to help alleviate some of the stress caused by this issue. They have been working to help keep store shelves stocked and construction projects on schedule.
With the water levels staying low all summer, these communities are having to wait for the winter roads in order to return to their regular resupply schedule, or to pay increased prices to have goods flown in. The GNWT’s new Support Funding for Businesses and Communities Impacted by Barge Cancellations plan is aiming to offset some of these costs for transporting goods. With the new funding, businesses and Indigenous and community governments can receive up to 50 percent of the difference between the expected cost for shipping goods on the barge and the increased cost of alternative shipping, to a maximum of $30,000 per business.
Danny McNeely, the MLA for the Sahtu region, said in a statement that he understands “the profound impact that the cancellation of this year’s barging season is having on our communities. The increased costs and disruptions to essential supplies are a serious burden on both families and businesses throughout our region. The effects ripple through every aspect of daily life, from heating our homes to stocking shelves in our local stores. I am grateful to the GNWT Cabinet for recognizing the severity of this situation and for taking decisive action to provide much-needed relief. Their support will help alleviate the immediate challenges we face, and I look forward to continued efforts to strengthen our region’s resilience in the face of future disruptions.”
Several safety measures are also being put in place for the coming winter roads. The Mackenzie Valley Winter Road will be widened where it can be, it will be given additional signage, as well as electronic signs to warn drivers of possible dangers. Patrols, checkpoints, and road maintenance activities are increased, supported by extra equipment and collaboration with local bylaw and RCMP officers.
