The governments of the NWT, Yukon, and Nunavut recently joined together with the Yukon Housing Corporation for a meeting to discuss the various housing issues across the North.
The three governments face similar issues when it comes to housing, and this meeting gave leaders a chance to share their experiences and begin work on developing a tri-territorial plan on what can be done.
Some of the ideas that were shared included capital build updates, home design, partnerships, housing needs assessments and funding agreements. The meeting ended with a tour of several projects that were already underway in Yukon.
Lucy Kuptana, the Minister responsible for Housing Northwest Territories, said that she was “pleased to collaborate with the Yukon and Nunavut as we work together to improve housing outcomes across the North. When staff work together and share best practices, it allows us to support Northern residents in the best, most effective way we can. Through partnership, we can implement housing solutions that meet the unique needs of Northerners.”
