Boater arrested for operating vessel while impaired in Back Bay

Yellowknife RCMP say charges are pending after a boater was caught operating a vessel under the influence on Back Bay.

At approximately 10:30pm on Tuesday, police responded to a report of an impaired boat operator near the Yellowknife River. Reports indicate the suspect boat nearly collided with another vessel.

RCMP intercepted the vessel and arrested the operator near Back Bay with the use of a police boat.

Criminal charges for impaired operation of a vessel are pending. The suspect will appear in court at a later date.

“Impaired operation of a vessel is a serious criminal offence and like impaired operation of a motor vehicle, it causes fatalities across Canada,” said RCMP in a statement.

“Yellowknife RCMP are committed to investigating these occurrences and will lay charges against impaired operators. Please practice safe boating and encourage others to do the same.”
