The GNWT has released its response to the Genuine Mackenzie Valley Fur (GMVF) Program Evaluation.
The GMVF Program supports traditional fur harvesters and participants in the traditional economy. Support is provided through access and promotion to the international fur market. The program also protects harvesters from unexpected market shifts and subsidizes costs of selling furs at auction.
The GMVF Program recently underwent an external review process to seek feedback and provide enhanced service. The evaluation was completed May 1, 2023.
The purpose of the evaluation – which focused on five sub-programs – was to improve the administration and delivery of the overall program and make recommendations for:
– clarifying mandates
– improving public services
– streamlining administration
– and improving accessibility and how to grow the programs for future years
The evaluation produced five recommendations aimed at improving the alignment, efficiency, and effectiveness of the program’s current structure.
Those recommendations – which the GNWT agreed to in full – include:
– Updating departmental roles and responsibilities related to program administration
– Optimizing the program’s database
– Regular planning for and hosting of gatherings similar to the GMVF Forum (March 2023)
– Dedicating resources to support program promotion and awareness-building activities
– Developing a performance measurement framework including a reporting system that aligns with the GMVF program goals and ensures alignment with the GMVF Strategy Monitoring and Accountability Plan.
