Yesterday in the Legislative Assembly, Premier Caroline Cochrane tabled a new strategy to address homelessness in the NWT.
The strategy is meant to build on existing efforts by the GNWT to address homelessness including enhanced support for individuals at risk of becoming homeless.
“The purpose of this Strategy, and the GNWT’s sustained efforts to improve service delivery, is to help those experiencing homelessness, or at risk of experiencing homelessness, to find a way home.” Premier Cochrane said.
According to the GNWT, the new strategy focuses on the importance of Indigenous, community, and non-government partners in finding people-centred solutions.
Addictions, mental health, and shelter services are highlighted in the new strategy and the GNWT plans to develop a dedicated unit to focus on addressing and preventing homelessness before it starts.
