The Department of Transportation says Highway 3 between Behchoko and Fort Providence will close at 10am on Friday, May 29.
The department says a 12-hour closure is expected and updates will be posted online throughout the day as information becomes available.
A number of forest fires are being fought in the region.
“There’s one fire just south of Behchoko by 50 km, to the east of Highway 3,” said Richard Olsen, the territory’s manager of fire operations.
“We’re doing operations on that right now, to limit the fire growth from getting close to the highway and putting travellers at risk.”
Transportation officials said the closure would involve “burn out operations to create a firebreak” in the area and “hopefully stop much worse fires and closures later”.
