Blachford Lake Lodge – A serene experience

Blachford Lake Lodge is located in the rugged wilderness of the NWT, in superb Aurora-watching country. Perched on a rock knoll overlooking Blachford Lake, it is only a half-hour bush-plane from the city of Yellowknife.

For Katherine Johnson, who was born into adventure travel, choosing Blachford Lake Lodge as a place of work was a no brainer.

“It’s an amazing watch. It’s run by a great family and it’s so much fun to be able to show people the beautiful territory we live in, every day.”

Blachford Lake Lodge is owned and operated by Mike Freeland who acquired the property as a single cabin in 1981. The lodge provides many of the benefits of a luxury hotel, a pristine wilderness environment and the perfect setting for watching the Aurora Borealis.

“It’s an amazing crystal clear Lake and we’re in the middle of nowhere. The main lodge is beautiful, hand built in 1999 and the cabin surrounding it just really shows off all of the high points of the land around us and the serenity that we have that so many people in the world don’t even get to experience.”

Along with watching the auroras, there’s always something to do at Blachford Lake Lodge.

“We’ve got a whole bunch of equipment for outdoor activities. We’ve got canoes, kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, we’ve got fat tire bikes. We’ve got a great swimming hole and lots to do hiking trails, lots to do to explore the outdoors.”

Katherine says that even though the auroras are most peoples favourite special thing they get to see, there is so much more to enjoy.

“To be able to experience the land, the serenity and the pure raw nature is such an important thing being up North.”

Blachford Lake Lodge & Wilderness Resort has become one of the world’s top Aurora viewing destinations so much so that William and Kate stayed there during their Royal visit in July 2011.
