Three hospitalizations from Gahcho Kué mine outbreak

Three workers who contracted COVID-19 at the Gahcho Kué diamond mine have been hospitalized.

Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Kami Kandola says the territory still has work to do to defeat this virus.

“These hospitalizations are a stark reminder that we must take this pandemic seriously and why public health measures need to remain in place,” she added.

There have been 19 total cases of the virus related to the outbreak at the mine site. Eight of the cases are still active, while the other 11 cases have recovered.

“We remain cautiously optimistic that the situation at the mine has stabilized,” adds Kandola.

Kandola also said the outbreak at the Gahcho Kué winter road worksite is over as there hasn’t been a new case there since February 1st.

The worksite had three cases of COVID-19, all of which have recovered and all contacts have completed isolation.
