Tibbitt to Contwoyto Winter Road opens with COVID -19 measures

The Tibbitt to Contwoyto Winter Road is now open for public travel with a ‘comprehensive COVID-19 control program’ in place.

The road, which connects Yellowknife to the Ekati, Diavik and Gahcho Kué mines, opened at 8:00 a.m. on February 8th.

An estimated 6,100 loads are expected to be transported to the mine sites between now and March 31st.

Protocols have been implemented based on advice from public health to prevent the spread of COVID -19 such as:

  • COVID-19 screening and testing for personnel that work on the Winter Road and for the truck drivers.
  • The Winter Road camps are closed to the public to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
  • Everyone is required to wear an approved facial barrier and practice two metre physical distancing.

Operators of the mine warn that the Winter Road may be closed for poor weather or for COVID-19 events to ensure public safety.
