Premier Cochrane appoints new Deputy Minister for the Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment

Yesterday Premier Caroline Cochrane announced the appointment of Pamela Strand as the Deputy Minister for the Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment (ITI).

“I am pleased to welcome Pamela Strand to her new position. I am confident that her education and work experience, combined with her commitment to work collaboratively and her desire to see the economic health of the NWT prosper, will make her well suited for this role,” Caroline Cochrane, Premier of the Northwest Territories said. “I’d also like to wish Tom all the best in retirement. During his time with ITI, he oversaw some of the largest files the GNWT managed during the last Assembly and has set a high bar for the department. His dedication and work ethic will be missed.”

Deputy Ministers serve at pleasure and are accountable to the Premier for their performance of their duties.

Ms. Strand has over 20 years of senior corporate executive leadership experience within both the private and public business sector; she spent 5 years in progressive senior management roles and has spent the past two and a half years as Assistant Deputy Minister for ITI.

Holding a Master’s degree in Geology, Ms. Strand started her career working for Con Mine in Yellowknife as an exploration geologist and over the years she has demonstrated the value industry experience brings to the decision-making table.

Ms. Strand will be replacing Mr. Tom Jensen who had announced his retirement earlier this year, after more than three years as Deputy Minister of ITI.

The Commissioner in the Executive Council appoints Deputy Ministers on the advice of the Premier and Deputy Ministers are the non-elected head of a GNWT Department.

Ms. Strand will assume her position in Yellowknife on December 2, 2019.
