Two men arrested following attempted thefts in Niven: RCMP

Yellowknife RCMP have arrested two men following attempted thefts in the Niven area early Wednesday morning.

Police say that at around 5:00 a.m., they received reports of ‘suspicious activity’ in and around vehicles and homes in the area.

Two 22-year-old men were apprehended at the scene, where RCMP say several vehicles appeared to have been illegally entered, someone had trespassed on properties and snow machines had been tampered with.

Jeremy Kuneyuna of Yellowknife has been charged with theft under $5,000, 10 counts of trespassing at night, two counts of failure to comply with probation orders and three counts of motor vehicle theft of a snowmobile.

The second suspect’s charges are still pending. He has been released from police custody and is expected to appear in court on Mar. 28.

Similar crime, different day

At around the same time on the morning of Feb. 7, police say a separate incident involving suspicious activity in and around vehicles in the Borden area was also reported.

Another 22-year-old man was arrested. He remains in custody with charges pending and is scheduled to appear in court on Feb. 28.

Police say they found tracks to somewhere between 30 to 40 vehicles during their investigation, and suspect they were from the suspect trying to enter the vehicles.

The Mounties are reminding residents to lock their car doors and to not leave any valuables or keys in their vehicles.

“It is also valuable for the public to be aware that under the provisions of the Northwest Territories Motor Vehicles Act, it is unlawful to leave an unattended vehicle running, unlocked, with the keys in the ignition,” said RCMP.
