Yellowknife councillor Bussey assumes title of Deputy Mayor

Yellowknife city councillor Linda Bussey says she brings experience and leadership to her new position as Deputy Mayor.

Bussey officially assumed the title during last Monday’s city council meeting.

She replaces fellow councillor Cory Vanthuyne, who had filled the position for the last two years.

For Bussey, the support of her colleagues was paramount.

“I got the full support of all council members so that meant a lot to me. The opportunity to grow is amazing so I’m embracing this as a great opportunity and see it as a great vote of confidence from my colleagues.

“I’m looking forward to learning more about how municipal politics work. I think participating in meetings is one thing but I’m looking forward to chairing meetings and working with administration.”

Bussey told Moose FM she takes great pride in being involved in her community.

She currently chairs the city’s Social Issues Committee and is co-chair of the Community Advisory Board.

“I think I bring a sense of leadership and I’m very involved in the committees that I chair. I’ve taken the position of a councillor very seriously and made sure to get involved.”

Unlike some of her colleagues, Bussey has confirmed that she will seek re-election when Yellowknifers head to the polls on October 19.
