Ottawa announces health-care funding deals with territories

Federal Finance Minister Bill Morneau announced the deals in a tweet Monday.

All three territorial governments have agreed to new targeted funding over 10 years for investments in home care and mental health care.

The targeted investments in home care and mental health care are in addition to the existing commitments through the Canada Health Transfer.

Under the agreement, the NWT will receive $7.4 million to support better home care and $6.1 million to fund new mental health initiatives.

“Health care in the North faces unique challenges and additional funding from Canada for seniors and mental health will help provide better care to some of our most vulnerable residents,” said NWT Premier Bob McLeod.

The agreements were finalized following a meeting between federal, provincial and territorial finance ministers in the nation’s capital last month.

New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and Nova Scotia reached similar health-care funding agreements with Ottawa before Christmas.

The federal government says provincial and territorial governments will be responsible for developing performance indicators and detailed plans on how funds will be spent over and above existing programs.
