Man pleads guilty to killing his uncle during Dettah house party

A man has pleaded guilty to manslaughter in connection with the death of his uncle during a Dettah house party last March.

UPDATE: Stanley Abel Jr. sentenced to 5 years for killing uncle

Stanley Abel Jr. entered his plea in a Yellowknife courtroom Monday.

In the early hours of Mar. 30, RCMP responded to a disturbance at a home in the community where they found a ‘grievously injured’ man.

By the time officers arrived, the suspect had already fled the scene. The victim was transported to Stanton Territorial Hospital.

That same day, police announced that the victim – Herman Abel – died of injuries he sustained during the attack.

RCMP originally arrested Abel Jr. on a charge of aggravated assault but later upgraded that charge to murder.

Abel Jr. elected to plead guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter rather than face trial. A date for sentencing will be set during his next court appearance on Jan. 16.
