Wolverine trap set up on Yellowknife school property

A wolverine trap has been set up in a wooded area behind Yellowknife’s William McDonald Middle School, prompting the school’s principal to issue a warning to parents.

Jeff Seabrook sent an email to parents on Sunday night warning of the trap.

He says the trap was laid at the direction of the territory’s Department of Environment and Natural Resources following multiple wolverine sightings over the past few days.

The school was even partially locked down last Wednesday when one was seen on school property.

“The live trap is away from any of the students … and for this reason we will be asking all students to stay in the open playground area,” Seabrook wrote in his email to parents.

“The students will not be allowed to enter into the wooded areas.

“[A] wildlife officer has assured me that this is a precaution and that they will be checking the trap multiple times throughout the day.

“They feel that our playground times and morning wake-up routine should run as normal and there should be no need for concern at this time.”

Seabrook says the school will take further precautions ‘as needed’ in the event of additional sightings.
