Canadian and US forces conduct exercise in Yellowknife

Yellowknife’s airport has been getting a lot of traffic from the United States this week – not from tourists, but troops.

Aircrafts, along with personnel and equipment from both the Canadian Armed Forces and the United States Air National Guard were sent to Yellowknife this week, all part of an exercise called Exercise Vigilant Shield 17.

The North American Aerospace Defense Command – also known as NORAD – is leading the exercise. NORAD is a bi-national command formed by a partnership between Canada and America.

This week’s exercise aims to conduct air sovereignty operations in areas in the North like Yellowknife.

The goal is to demonstrate the ability of military personnel from both countries to work together to go up against possible threats in some of the more remote regions in the world.

The exercise started on Monday and wraps up Friday.
