‘Operation Impact’ nabs six impaired drivers over holiday

A police initiative aimed at making Canadian roads safer nabbed six impaired drivers in the NWT over Thanksgiving weekend.

RCMP announced results from this year’s Operation Impact last Friday.

The country-wide operation takes place every year with the goal of making Canada’s roads the safest in the world.

Over the course of the long weekend, police were on the lookout for dangerous driving habits like speeding, seatbelt infractions and distracted driving especially.

In the Northwest Territories, a total of six people were charged with impaired driving and a further six drivers had their licenses suspended.

Altogether, over 100 charges were laid under the territory’s Motor Vehicle Act. Several other charges under the Liquor Act are still pending.

“The RCMP is working hard to ensure that the motoring public is safe from those who take risks by driving impaired or who drive their vehicles without courtesy for others,” said police in a statement.

“Northwest Territories RCMP Traffic Services work closely with other agencies towards keeping NWT roads safe and having the motorists reach their destination without event.”
