Hay River awakens: Star Wars finally hits the town’s cinema

Almost a month after the movie’s debut elsewhere, Star Wars: The Force Awakens is finally set for the big screen in Hay River.

According to the Riverview Cineplex on Facebook, the theatre will begin showing the movie on Friday evening.

There are no advance ticket sales, so admission will be on a first-come, first-served basis. Doors open at 7:30pm on Friday.

The movie will be shown in 3D for its first week, then 2D from January 22 until its last day, January 28.

In December, the cinema’s owners attributed the delay to the way entertainment conglomerate Disney chooses to release its movies.

Asked on Facebook when the movie would appear, the cinema wrote: “Disney won’t open movies on release in smaller theatres.”

The Force Awakens was first screened in Yellowknife, and across the rest of Canada, on December 18.
