Yellowknife city council talks parking meters in downtown core

Yellowknife, NWT – The issue of parking meters on downtown Yellowknife streets has been reignited at City Hall.

Earlier this week, councillors discussed a memorandum to install more parking meters on select downtown streets over the next year.

If approved, over 150 meters would be installed on 48th, 51st and 52nd street this year, followed by another 175 on three other streets next year.

Councillor Niels Konge says more paid parking is the answer.

“I think our parking is just like the pool or the arena. It’s a city owned commodity and we’re giving it away. This has annoyed several businesses when it first came up. I received a lot of phone calls requesting that I go and steal a meter from somewhere and put it in front of a few businesses. They really like the idea.”

Councillor Bob Brooks disagrees.

“This was not requested by any businesses because we already have a policy in place where if there’s a business we put a parking meter in front of the business so that we ensure there’s customer turnaround and it’s only a two-hour meter or so. Since this isn’t being requested by the businesses, this is simply a money grab.”

The issue of downtown parking will resurface during next week’s council meeting.
