Warning: Scammers targeting NWT power customers

Two northern power companies say their customers are being targeted by fraudsters.

Northland Utilities says residents in Yellowknife and Hay River are receiving calls from scammers claiming to represent the company. They threaten to disconnect customers unless a payment is made.

The Northwest Territories Power Corporation (NTPC) says the same thing is happening to customers in Fort Simpson.

At least two NTPC residential customers and two businesses in Fort Simpson have been targeted. Northland says eight to 10 customers in Yellowknife and Hay River reported similar calls on Wednesday and Thursday this week.

“In some cases customers are being asked to call a toll-free number, or get a prepaid VISA card to make the payment,” explained Lori Burrill, Northland Utilities’ customer service supervisor.

“These calls are not being made from Northland Utilities or on our behalf. If you receive one, don’t make a payment and please call our office.

“It is not something we would do. Instead, call us and we can discuss your account with you.”

In a news release, the Power Corporation said: “While NTPC may call to collect overdue accounts they will not specifically ask for credit card payment and will have details like account numbers, when your last payment was made, how much that payment was and will be calling from the Northwest Territories.”

The NTPC says any customers receiving calls demanding immediate payment should call NTPC customer service (1-855-575-6872) or contact RCMP with the details.

Northland’s number is 867-873-4865 in Yellowknife or 867-874-6879 in Hay River.
