The city of Yellowknife is looking for input from the public on two major initiatives, including a climate resiliency action plan and a comprehensive update to the community plan.
“We’re asking people to think with ambition and help shape what Yellowknife can be,” said Mayor Ben Hendriksen in a recent announcement.
“This is your city, and your voice matters in building its future,” added Mayor Hendriksen.
The Climate Action Plan will cover a 50-year period of “climate resiliency” planning and will be guided by input from residents, businesses, and organizations through an online survey until Friday (July 4) along with a public round table that was held earlier this month.
More information is available through a link to the PlaceSpeak platform on the city’s website.
Representatives from the city emphasized that participation in the planning discussions by city residents will help ensure the new proposed climate actions help build a “healthier” and “more sustainable future” to reflect community values and priorities.
The city asks anyone who would like more information to head to www.yellowknife.ca/ClimateAction/ or email [email protected].
Representatives from the city said planners are asking the public to share “vision, priorities, and ideas for the future” for their soon-to-be updated Community Plan that will span a 25-year period. The city said they will apply the input received from community members to create the new plan called “Let’s Talk YK 2050.”
The city’s updated community plan will be guided by how Yellowknifers see the growth and evolution of the city’s housing, infrastructure, land use, environment and climate resilience, said city planners.
“Yellowknife is growing, changing and facing many opportunities and challenges, some we can see coming and some that we cannot right now. A community plan is an important tool to help guide our community over the next twenty-five years regardless of what comes,” said city representatives in a recent announcemtn.
Planners are asking city residents what they want Yellowknife to “look and feel like in 25 years.”
The city has created a variety of opportunities for people to share their inut including:

- Applying to be a Community Animator to help with engagement events, which include tasks like welcoming participants, encouraging feedback, and taking notes. A detailed role description and the application form can be found here.
- people can keep themselves informed by following the project on PlaceSpeak — the city said all updates, announcements, and future engagement opportunities will be shared through the platform.
